In the quiet village of Ulak Batu in Seruyan Regency, [Abdul Wahab](https://kaleka.id/our-stories/abdul-wahab-planting-trees-of-hope-against-th), a Dayak farmer, began his journey of reforesting his homeland. “Our village used to be surrounded by fertile, natural, and dense forests. But the forest has become thinner in the past few years with frequent fires and floods. In 2021, the worst flooding occurred for 4 months, causing residents to disrupt community activities. But we didn't give up. We started planting trees to support economic activities and environmental protection. Through this tree planting, together we can reduce the level of flooding in the village or prevent other disasters and secure our tomorrow,” said Abdul Wahab.

A few kilometers away from Abdul Wahab’s village, [Soewarno](https://kaleka.id/our-stories/soewarno-supporting-smallholders-on-the-groun), a farmer from Pangkalan Dewa village, just broke the record for certifying independent smallholders at scale. He leads a farmer group with a total of 2,227 members. The number of independent smallholders certified exceeds the average number of members within one farmer group.

Abdul Wahab and Soewarno represent just a fraction of the numerous farmers who have benefited from Unilever's collaboration with Kaleka in the [Mosaik initiative](https://kaleka.id/strategic-initiative/the-mosaik-initiative). The Mosaik Initiative in Kalimantan, Indonesia, focuses on safeguarding and revitalizing nature in a key commodity-producing region. It comprises two flagship programs: jurisdictional approaches and sustainable village development. The jurisdictional approach aims to apply certification standards like Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) or Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) across all producers in a governmental area. The second flagship is [the sustainable village development program](https://kaleka.id/intervention/gawi-bahaum-bringing-sustainability-to-the-vi), or known as Gawi Bapakat in the local language. The program aims to provide all villages with access to financial and technical support to make the transition towards sustainability. Through a bottom-up process, local communities can propose financial and technical support for sustainable livelihoods in their villages. Gawi Bapakat is designed with a simple application process, using a bottom-up approach, to ensure that the program is accessible to all communities in the entire district.

## **The Journey**

Unilever and Kaleka started collaborating in 2016 when we signed an MoU on Sustainable Palm Oil development in ​the district of Kotawaringin Barat. It was the first public-private partnership of its kind, and the signatories included ​the Central Kalimantan Provincial Government and the Kotawaringin Barat District Government.

The first group certified was KUD Tani Subur. It is a village cooperative in Pangkalan Tiga Village, which has grown into ​a multi-billion rupiah cooperative with diversified assets including a two-billion rupiah credit and loan facility: cattle, ​fish, and poultry breeding facilities; a two-story supermarket and a popular sprawling agrotourism center set up in the ​middle of an oil palm plantation. Di Desa Ulak Batu yang tenang di Kabupaten Seruyan, [Abdul Wahab](https://kaleka.id/our-stories/abdul-wahab-planting-trees-of-hope-against-th), seorang petani suku Dayak, memulai perjalanannya dalam menghijaukan tanah kelahirannya. “Dulu desa kami dikelilingi hutan yang subur, alami, dan lebat. Namun wilayah hutan semakin menipis dalam beberapa tahun terakhir karena seringnya terjadi kebakaran dan banjir. Pada tahun 2021, banjir terparah terjadi selama 4 bulan sehingga mengganggu aktivitas masyarakat. Tapi kami tidak menyerah. Kami mulai menanam pohon untuk mendukung kegiatan ekonomi dan perlindungan lingkungan. Melalui penanaman pohon ini, kami bersama-sama dapat mengurangi tingkat banjir di desa atau mencegah bencana lainnya demi hari esok yang lebih baik,” kata Abdul Wahab.

Beberapa kilometer dari desa tempat tinggal Abdul Wahab, [Soewarno](https://kaleka.id/our-stories/soewarno-supporting-smallholders-on-the-groun), seorang petani dari desa Pangkalan Dewa, baru saja memecahkan rekor sertifikasi petani swadaya dalam skala besar. Ia memimpin kelompok tani yang beranggotakan 2.227 orang. Jumlah petani swadaya yang tersertifikasi melebihi rata-rata jumlah anggota dalam satu kelompok tani.

 \n Abdul Wahab dan Soewarno hanyalah sebagian kecil dari sekian banyak petani yang memperoleh manfaat dari kolaborasi Unilever dengan Kaleka dalam[Inisiatif Mosaik](https://kaleka.id/strategic-initiative/the-mosaik-initiative). Inisiatif Mosaik di Kalimantan, Indonesia, berfokus dalam menjaga dan merevitalisasi alam di wilayah penghasil komoditas utama. Program ini terdiri dari dua program utama: pendekatan yurisdiksi dan pembangunan desa berkelanjutan. Pendekatan yurisdiksi bertujuan untuk menerapkan standar sertifikasi seperti *Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO)* atau *Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)* di seluruh produsen di wilayah pemerintahan. Keunggulan dari keduanya adalah program pembangunan desa berkelanjutan atau dikenal dengan Gawi Bapakat dalam bahasa lokal. Program ini bertujuan untuk memberikan kepada semua desa akses terhadap dukungan finansial dan teknis untuk melakukan transisi menuju keberlanjutan. Melalui proses *bottom-up,* masyarakat lokal dapat mengusulkan dukungan finansial dan teknis untuk penghidupan berkelanjutan di desa mereka. Gawi Bapakat dirancang dengan proses pengajuan yang sederhana, menggunakan pendekatan *bottom-up,* untuk memastikan bahwa program ini dapat diakses oleh semua komunitas di seluruh kabupaten.

## **Sebuah Perjalanan**

Unilever dan Kaleka memulai kolaborasi pada tahun 2016 ketika kami menandatangani MoU pengembangan Minyak Sawit Berkelanjutan di Kabupaten Kotawaringin Barat. Hal ini merupakan kemitraan publik-swasta pertama yang penandatangannya mencakup Pemerintah Provinsi Kalimantan Tengah dan Pemerintah Kabupaten Kotawaringin Barat.

Kelompok pertama yang tersertifikasi adalah KUD Tani Subur. Ini adalah koperasi desa di Desa Pangkalan Tiga, yang telah berkembang menjadi koperasi bernilai miliaran rupiah dengan aset yang terdiversifikasi termasuk fasilitas kredit dan pinjaman dua miliar rupiah: fasilitas peternakan sapi, ikan, dan unggas; supermarket dua lantai dan pusat agrowisata populer yang didirikan di tengah perkebunan kelapa sawit.
